GIANTS All-Australian full forward Jeremy Cameron has trained ahead of the club’s opening game against the Swans this Saturday.
Cameron sustained an ankle injury in the GIANTS’ final practice match against the Adelaide Crows last Friday but trained for around 30 minutes at Spotless Stadium today.
GIANTS Coach Leon Cameron says he was pleased with how Cameron trained and is optimistic he will be right to play.
“He trained today. It’s a positive sign, hopefully he pulls up really well tonight and tomorrow,” he said. “We’ll assess on Friday but it’s all looking pretty positive from that point of view.”
With Tim Mohr and Sam Schulz the only players on the GIANTS’ injury list, coach Cameron has 45 players to choose from for Saturday’s Sydney Derby V.
For one of the first times in the club’s three-year history, Cameron said there is genuine competition for spots with players “busting” for a Round 1 berth.
“It’s probably the first time ... that guys are actually competing full-on against each other to actually get into that 22,” he said.
“There’s going to be four or five guys, or six guys, that have played pretty well throughout that NAB Cup series that are going to be a bit disappointed.
“But it’s good for us, great problem to have for our coaches and it’s good that our players are busting to get in and have a crack.
“We’ve got about 45 to choose from, everyone wants to play in the 22 which is great (and it’s) competitive for spots.”
With just three days to go until Round 1, Cameron said the GIANTS just want to get out on the field to face the Swans in the Battle of the Bridge.
“The guys have just had a really good pre-season and are ready for action this weekend. Now the real stuff starts.”
Saturday’s match is the first Battle of the Bridge to be played at the GIANTS’ home ground.
