An exciting week for the GIANTS has continued, with star defender Connor Idun signing a six-year contract extension.
Already signed on until the end of the 2026 AFL season, Idun has added an additional six years to his contract to tie himself to the club until at least the end of the 2032 AFL season.
The new deal sees Idun become one of the AFL’s longest signed players and comes just days after the re-signing of young gun Finn Callaghan to a new four-year deal.
Drafted by the club with pick 61 in the 2018 draft, Idun has since cemented himself as a vital piece of the GIANTS’ side and one of the competition’s most reliable and dynamic defenders.
An extremely powerful athlete, Idun took his game to a new level in 2021 where he played 21 out of a possible 22 games to establish himself as a young star of the competition.
Idun has since continued to be one of the GIANTS’ most consistent performers and in 2023 was the joint winner of the club’s Best Finals Player following a brilliant September.
Recently voted into the club’s leadership group for a third straight season, Idun’s new deal comes following a career-best season from the 24-year-old.
Playing in all 25 games, the 191cm defender consolidated himself as one of the competition’s elite one-on-one and intercept defenders in a brilliant 2024 season which saw him finish fourth in the Kevin Sheedy Medal.
GIANTS Executive General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, was delighted to lock away another of the club’s young stars.
“It’s really exciting to have Connor make such a long-term commitment to the club,” McCartney said.
“He’s an exceptional young footballer and an exceptional young leader who has continued to get better every year and at just 24 years old it’s exciting that his best is well and truly still to come.
“Connor has proven himself to be one of our most reliable and consistent players and he really provides our backline with great flexibility. After coming off a career-best year we’re really excited about what he can produce not only this year but well into the future.
“We’ve built a great club that we know our players love and Connor’s commitment to the club alongside Finn Callaghan’s recent re-signing is further testament to the amazing culture that we have at the GIANTS.”
The GIANTS will take on the Blues in the 2025 AAMI Community Series in Canberra this Friday, before they open their season the following week with a blockbuster Opening Round clash with Collingwood at ENGIE Stadium on Sunday, March 9.
