The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS are preparing for an historic clash in Canberra when they take on Essendon in the first ever AFL game under the lights at Manuka Oval on Friday night.

The GIANTS defeated reigning premiers the Sydney Swans by 24 points in the first round of the NAB Cup at Blacktown and have suffered narrow defeats to Carlton and the Brisbane Lions by two and three points respectively.

Head Coach Kevin Sheedy will take on his Canberra born protege and now Essendon coach James Hird in a not-to-be-missed clash at Manuka Oval. The match will form part of a bumper weekend of celebrations to make the Centenary of Canberra.

GIANTS CEO David Matthews said that the club was proud to be part of an important year in the history of the ACT.

"This is a huge weekend for Canberra with a number of big sporting events, our fan day and a public holiday on Monday," Matthews said.

"We are excited to be a part of Canberra's Centenary Celebrations and thank the ACT Government and Sports Minister Andrew Barr in particular for the support that we've had in the nation's capital."

GIANTS ACT Members and Ultimate GIANT members will be able to enter Friday night's match free of charge.

Fans will also be able to meet the players at the ACT Fan Day on Saturday March 9 between 9.30 and 11.30am at Kippax Oval in Holt. This will be followed by the UWS GIANTS playing the under 23 ACT team.
