In five days time, the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS will play their first ever AFL match against the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium.

Years of hard work and a massive investment from the AFL, NSW government and Western Sydney community will come to fruition when the club’s inaugural squad competes in the first ever Sydney Derby.

The GIANTS kicked off a monumental week in the club’s history today with a training session at Blacktown International Sportspark.

GIANTS Co-Captain Phil Davis said that while he is excited about what lies ahead, the enormity of what is to come hasn’t sunk in yet.

“It’s very exciting, we’ve had a really good preseason and our NAB Cup form has been solid so we’ll be going out there are having a really good shot at them on Saturday night.

“When the siren goes it will be a massive moment in the history of our football club.

“I tend not to be too nervous but I think come Friday and Saturday the reality of just how special this is will hit me. The nerves will build as the week goes on.”

Davis said that some of his younger teammates are looking to impress on the training track this week as they fight for their place in the AFL history books.

“For the young blokes, they’ll be really pushing for selection.

“Wednesday’s training session will be a great opportunity for those last four, five or six spots to be up for grabs.”

The next five days are not only an important step for the newest club in the AFL but also for the code itself as they prepare for Thursday’s AFL launch which will be held at Sydney Town Hall for the first time in the 150- year history of the game.

“That’s a huge moment for the AFL and a great opportunity for them to show how serious they are about the Sydney market.

“The season launch has never been held outside of Melbourne. It’s fantastic that they’ll be up here to really embark on our journey with us.”
