NRL convert Israel Folau has been cleared to make his AFL debut for the GIANTS in this Saturday’s opening round against the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium.

The big forward was reported on two separate charges of rough conduct in the GIANTS’ final NAB Cup match against Richmond in Canberra last Saturday.

The AFL Match Review Panel found Folau had no case to answer on either charge, opening the way for him to play this weekend.

GIANTS Head Coach Kevin Sheedy said the club was delighted Folau would take to the field in the historic match.

“I think it’s a good decision. I think it’s a common sense decision looking back on both incidents,” he said.

Sheedy said Folau’s first AFL match was a significant moment for the game.

“He’s a very courageous young man. Anyone who has had the career that he’s had in NRL to cross over and play AFL is very courageous,” he said.

“He’s going to run out there against the Swans on Saturday night and I think the whole football world is awaiting to see how he copes.”
