Saturday’s 108-point thumping of Gold Coast was the biggest win in the GIANTS’ seven-year history.
We take a look back at the five biggest winning margins the team has recorded over the journey.
1) 108-point win vs Gold Coast, Round 12, 2018 at Spotless Stadium
Keen to back up a season-changing historic first win over the Crows at Adelaide Oval from a week prior, the GIANTS meant business when they hosted the Suns at Spotless Stadium on Saturday, June 9.
After a somewhat wasteful first term that yielded 2.6, few would have predicted the onslaught that was about to unfold.
Led by spearhead Jeremy Cameron, who kicked three goals for the term (and six for the match), the GIANTS piled on a much more accurate 7.3 to the Suns’ 2.1 to blow the margin out to 44 points by the main break.
They didn’t take the foot off the pedal in a brilliant third quarter, booting 8.3 and keeping the Suns to one goal, before injuries and a two-man bench took their toll in the final term.
The GIANTS added a more modest 3.2, but restricted the Suns to a solitary behind to ensure the team’s biggest win in its existence.
2) 102-point win vs Gold Coast, Round 2, 2017 at Spotless Stadium
Same venue, similar result when the GIANTS hosted the Suns at Spotless Stadium last season.
The contest was well and truly in the GIANTS’ control by quarter-time, after a 7.4 to 1.2 opening stanza. The Suns mounted a small comeback late in the second term and in the early stages of the third quarter, before the GIANTS responded, kicking 14 goals to the Suns’ three in the second half.
Jeremy Cameron was again the star in front of goals, bagging six majors again, but was closely followed by Toby Greene, who snagged five in his 100th game.
Callan Ward gathered 32 disposals, with Dylan Shiel (28) and Josh Kelly (27) also seeing plenty of the ball.
It was a huge response from the GIANTS, who were disappointed with their efforts against the Crows in the season-opener, having gone down by 56 points.
3) 92 points vs Fremantle, Round 22, 2016 at Spotless Stadium
The GIANTS hit full flight heading into their first AFL finals series, demolishing the Dockers by 92 points – at the time a club record – in the penultimate round of the 2016 season.
After a tight opening half, the GIANTS were up by three goals, but incredibly they kept the Dockers scoreless after the main break – conceding just two behinds as they piled on 11.8 themselves.
It was Jonathon Patton’s turn to star in front of goals, slotting through six majors, while Ryan Griffen was in superb touch, collecting 30 disposals and laying 10 tackles.
Nick Haynes, Adam Tomlinson and Heath Shaw were in formidable form in defence, collecting 13, 12 and 11 marks respectively to go with their 20-plus disposals each.
The performance indicated the intentions of a GIANTS team eager to show its credentials and build momentum on the eve of finals.
4) 91 points vs Gold Coast, Round 8, 2016 at Spotless Stadium
Another game against the Suns at Spotless Stadium, another dominant performance from Jeremy Cameron.
In round eight, 2016, he booted 7.2 as the GIANTS sailed to a massive win at home.
Jacob Hopper made it a debut to remember, notching up an incredible 32 possessions in his first AFL match, while Dylan Shiel (35), Zac Williams (31) and Josh Kelly (29) were also influential.
The win continued a strong run of scoring for the GIANTS, who’d already notched up three scores of more than 125 points in the space of a month, with big wins over Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Hawthorn, before a closer three-goal win over Fremantle heading into the Gold Coast game.
5) 88 points vs Richmond, Round 19, 2016 at UNSW Canberra Oval
The 2016 season was a big coming-of-age for the GIANTS, and as they marched towards their first finals appearance, they reminded everyone the defensive side of their game was just as impressive as the offensive.
The GIANTS’ 17 goals came from nine different sources, but they also held Richmond to just 3.5 (23) – the Tigers’ lowest score in 55 years and, still to this day, the lowest score conceded by the GIANTS.
Stephen Coniglio was best afield with 33 touches and seven tackles in a brilliant outing, while Tom Scully (30 disposals, 5 marks) and Heath Shaw (29 disposals, 11 marks) were also influential, and ruckman Shane Mumford was a force to be reckoned with.
