The Northern GIANTS were outstanding on Saturday at Tom Wills Oval in their clash with the Gold Coast Suns, winning by 35 points in wet conditions.
GIANTS AFL Women’s contracted players Alicia Eva, Phoebe Monahan and Ellie Brush were among the Northern GIANTS’ best, while former rookie Haneen Zrieka was impressive in the 7.8 (50) to 2.3 (15) win.
Eva kicked a goal and set up another while playing in her familiar role as an on-baller, while Monahan was solid in
“It was a lot of fun, it’s such a great opportunity for girls from the AFL Sydney competition to play up a level and showcase their abilities,” Monahan said.
“Having only trained a handful of times together we really gelled as a unit.
“It felt good being back alongside Nicola Barr, Brush and Renee Tomkins in the backline.”
“There’s always room for improvement but it was great to get a win under our belt.”
The Gold Coast Suns will enter AFLW in 2020 and Monahan said they’re already building a competitive squad.
“They came out firing in every quarter,” she said.
“They were tough at the ball, held their structures and were a tough team to play against.”

On Sunday, the Southern GIANTS came up against a strong Brisbane Lions side that featured more than a dozen AFLW-listed players at Tom Wills Oval.

Despite impressive performances from inaugural GIANT Britt Tully and young Holbrook product Alyce Parker, the Southern GIANTS were held scoreless, losing 0.0 (0) to 18.8 (116).
Tully was tireless playing in the midfield for the Southern GIANTS, while Parker, who recently represented New South Wales in the NAB Under 18’s National Championships, found plenty of the ball playing in the midfield and off half-back.
The second round of the Winter Women’s Series takes place in two weeks’ time, with the Northern GIANTS taking on Brisbane at Zilmere on Saturday, June 23 and the Southern GIANTS
