The AFL's newest rivalry stands at one win apiece after the Gold Coast Suns defeated the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS by 30 points at Metricon Stadium.

It was the Suns first win at home and just its second for the season and lifts them off the bottom of the AFL ladder with a superior percentage to the GIANTS who have also won two games in their first year.

It was also the Suns' first win at home after the GIANTS brought up their first victory at Skoda Stadium with a 34 point win over Port Adelaide last week.

It was also revenge for the their loss to the Giants at Manuka Oval in round seven and defeat at the hands of the AFL's newest club in the NAB Cup.

Both sides were missing a number of key players through injury but showed they determined to avoid the wooden spoon with a hard fought first quarter.

Scores were locked at the end of the first term, but the Suns moved ahead at the long break to eventually win 16.13 (109) to 12.7 (79).

A six-goal streak stretching across half-time helped Gold Coast bolt away from the visitors as the home-team found its radar in front of goal.

At one stage the Suns' lead  blew out to 44 points but the Giants refused to give in, pulling the margin back to 17 points in the final quarter before Gary Ablett scored two late goals.

For the Giants, Will Hoskin-Elliott kicked five goals in his best game for the club since he was drafted with selection four in last year's draft.

Midfielder Adam Treloar worked hard all night as did Tom Scully, and Adam Tomlinson also played one of his best games since he joined the club.

The GIANTS will travel to Canberra next Saturday to play Melbourne at Manuka Oval.
