The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS and the Sydney Swans today announced that the inaugural Sydney Derby will be played for the White Ribbon Trophy.

Chairman of White Ribbon Australia, Andrew O’Keefe said that the association with the Sydney Derby was an exciting opportunity for the Foundation.

“Every year from now on, that White Ribbon trophy will kick off the year’s White Ribbon campaign,” he said.

“We are so excited to be associated with the birth of the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS.

“They might disagree about who is going to win on Saturday but we are all united about what this trophy stands for. It stands for a very simple concept and that is that violence against women is never okay.”

GIANTS Co-Captain Luke Power said that the club was honoured to be involved with the White Ribbon campaign and that Saturday’s match would be the start of an exciting tradition for the club.

“We’re rapt to be associated with white ribbon. The AFL is a great game, not only for males but for a lot of females.

“We have many females who hold really important positions in our game. Without their contribution the game wouldn’t be what it is.

“We look forward to a historic night on Saturday night and we urge everyone in Sydney to get down to ANZ Stadium and support us.”
