Well there’s a big big sound from London Town, with the formation of the South East London GIANTS.
The side is made up of a combination of Ex-pat Australians and European players new to the game.
The team was created out of the Dulwich Dragons, who formed in 2007, as a social team competing in the AFL London competition. After substantial growth, which included a surge in sponsorship, supporters and players, the club made a steady climb up the AFL London divisions, and now play in the AFL London- 2nd Division.
In 2012, the Dulwich Dragons became an affiliate club to the GWS GIANTS and are now known as the South East London GIANTS.
The club is set to be featured on Channel 5, which is one of the biggest TV channels in the UK, and their British supporter base continues to grow each day.
The club is still in its infancy and is developing with each season. Last season the team was beaten seven times by more than ten goals, before eventually breaking through for their first win.
South East London GIANTS member, Lonnie Pitcher said the teams first win as the GIANTS was a momentous occasion and singing the GIANTS song for the first time was a historic moment in the young clubshistory.
“It was a great moment when we got to sing the song. We had to write it up on the team white board so everyone could see the words. It is a day that every player still talks about and one we will certainly never forget.”
Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy manager, Lachlan Buszard said the South East London GIANTS would assist the growth of the game into new markets.
“By the club linking with the South East London GIANTS, we are helping to develop AFL overseas and positioning our brand into the UK market. Also with the growing number of AFL players making it in the AFL, such as Canadian, Mike Pyke at Sydney and American, Shae McNamara at Collingwood, you never know the next AFL star might come out of Britain and the South East London GIANTS.”
