The GWS GIANTS have been put to the test in only the second training session of 2012, with the players being put through an arduous 3km time trial at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre.

Despite the hot conditions, the players displayed tremendous results with everyone pushing themselves to the limit.

Several players posted personal best times, which is evidence of the hard work they have put in on the training track and during the festive season.

The standout improver was Adam Treloar who improved his time by over a minute, whilst Gerald Ugle took fifty seconds off his personal best and Adam Kennedy improving by twenty one seconds.

Tom Scully took out the time trial with a time of 9.37, with Tomas Bugg and Steve Clifton following close behind.

GIANTS Sports Science Manager, John Quinn was impressed with all the players and said he couldn’t ask for more at this time of year.

"I am tremendously pleased with today’s results. We set the players a pretty arduous program over the holidays and today was a test for not just whether they have done the program, but did the program work".

"The average improvement from our list of players is fifteen seconds. A lot of our young boys spent the last two days at the AFLPA Induction Camp down in Melbourne, so to come back and do what they have done today but also then go and complete a full session afterwards is impressive."

"Tom Scully did remarkably well. It’s great for the club because we know he is a terrific athlete and we know he is a terrific footballer but there have been some who have placed question marks over him due to an injury to his knee. So his efforts today have shown anyone that has second thoughts about the fitness of Tom Scully.

"He is in a first class rehab program that is seeing him through and today is testament to that.He is an outstanding young person, and he works very very hard".

"Tomas Bugg had an operation on his hip so couldn’t do a lot of preseason training so for him to come out today and put in the performance he did for a 3km is a tremendous effort".

"The young guys that we have just drafted in November like Adam Tomlinson and Nick Haynes, who are both pretty tall, well build, strong lads and for them to run like they did today, I think it’s so exciting".

"I have been involved at a fantastic football club for a decade with Essendon, but if you look at this side’s ability, and compare their running ability, its set us up well in terms of our physical ability".

"We set pretty high standards, and we are tremendously happy with what they have done today".

"We are just not preparing these players to play football in 2012 but we are getting them ready to be superstars in the game in three to four years. It’s all about management of the list, this shows we have some talent here and we can look in our crystal ball and say we have something pretty special here".
