Tim Taranto wondered how he was ever going to get a game after the GIANTS called his name at pick 2 in the 2016 draft.

Taranto suspected he would be heading for the Gold Coast, who had a bunch of top 10 picks, before the GIANTS worked their way up the draft order during the trade period.

The club had played off in a preliminary final that year, leaving Taranto to wonder how he would ever break into the side in his first year.

The midfielder – who ended up missing games only through an ankle injury in his first season – reflects on his draft year in the latest episode of Becoming GIANT, presented by Bingo Industries.

“I was pretty flat at one point. I thought ‘far out, I’m not playing for a while, they’ve got the best midfield in the comp,” said Taranto, who won the Kevin Sheedy Medal as club champion in his third season last year.

“But I was talking to one of my coaches, saying ‘how am I even going to get a game here?’ and they were just saying I was versatile, I can play multiple positions and that will help me.

“I guess I kind of figured out pretty quickly that I was actually a bit closer than I thought, after a few weeks of training.

“I thought, ‘I’m around the mark to be in the best 22, so I’ll just train hard and see what happens.

“We had a couple of injuries coming into my first year, so that’s probably the reason I got a few games. And I’ve kind of held on.”

Taranto is one of a number of GIANTS to have told the story behind their journey to the club in Becoming GIANT.

Players including Heath Shaw, Lachie Whitfield, Alyce Parker and Zac Williams have featured in other episodes.
