Leon Cameron will become just the sixth Life Member of the GIANTS when he coaches his 150th game on Saturday.
Just the second coach in the club’s history, Cameron took over from inaugural coach Kevin Sheedy at the end of the 2013 season.
The 47-year-old has coached the past seven seasons and led the GIANTS to the last four finals series in a row, with the GIANTS the only team in the competition to have won a final in each of those four years.
GIANTS Chairman Tony Shepherd announced the honour to Cameron and the playing group via video conference on Thursday.
Mr Shepherd paid tribute to the role Cameron has played at the club.
“Leon has been a wonderful leader of our club with his empathy, passion and energy helping build the strong culture of the GIANTS," said Mr Shepherd.
“With the support of his wife Caz and three children Amelia, Harry and Jack, Leon has achieved a lot in his time as coach and we’re delighted to make him a Life Member of the club.”
Kevin Sheedy was the inaugural Life Member of the club in 2015 with Callan Ward (2018), Jeremy Cameron (2019), Phil Davis (2020) and Toby Greene (2020) bestowed the honour after playing 150 games for the AFL’s youngest club.
Cameron played 256 AFL games for Footscray and Richmond between 1990 and 2003 after being recruited from South Warrnambool Football Club with pick 7 in the 1988 National Draft.
After retiring, Cameron joined the Western Bulldogs as an Assistant Coach from 2004 to 2010 under Peter Rohde and Rodney Eade.
Cameron joined Hawthorn as an Assistant Coach in September 2010 and was part of the coaching staff that took the Hawks to the 2012 Grand Final before he joined the GIANTS.
