Bigger, Taller, Stronger
Heading into their third year in the AFL, the GIANTS are bigger, taller and stronger than ever before.
When the AFL’s newest club entered the competition in 2012, the average height of the young list was 187cm.
With the addition of Swans premiership ruckman Shane Mumford and 206cm ruckman Rory Lobb, the average height of the list is now 189cm.
Two years ago the average weight of the group was 83kg but the hours spent in the gym are paying off with the average weight now jumping to 87kg.
The average games played for the list has dramatically increased from 24 games to 34 with only the GIANTS’ first-year recruits yet to play a game.
Ten players who started their AFL journey with the GIANTS in 2012 are on track to bring up their 50-game milestone this season including Dylan Shiel (33 games), Adam Treloar (38 games), Stephen Coniglio (30 games), Toby Greene (38 games), Devon Smith (38 games) and Curtly Hampton (35 games).
Young star forward Jeremy Cameron - who is already an All-Australian, two-time GIANTS leading goal kicker and Kevin Sheedy Medal winner - has now played 37 games.
As well as blooding the young players, the recruitment of Josh Hunt (198 games), Heath Shaw (173 games), Mumford (100 games), and Dylan Addison (88 games) has added 559 games of experience to the list over summer.
Much has been made of the tall timber in the forward line, with Jon Patton, Tom Boyd and Cameron truly making it the Land of the GIANTS.
But the height doesn’t stop there with former basketballers-turned-ruckmen Rory Lobb (206cm) and Tom Downie (203cm) ready to impose themselves on the competition.
They’re not alone at that height with Boyd (202cm), Andrew Phillips (201cm) and Jonathan Giles (200cm) taking the number of GIANTS over the two metre mark to five.
And with 70 per cent of the list signed beyond 2014, the club is surely set for a GIANT future.
