Margaret and Bob Hawkins got the surprise of their lives when star GIANT Toby Greene rang the GIANTS fans to congratulate them on their 60th wedding anniversary.
The 86-year-olds from Hornsby Heights weren’t expecting Toby on the line when they answered the phone on Thursday.
A social media post by their son Peter alerted the club to the sweet story of the big fans who are often spotted out and about walking in their GIANTS gear.
When the club found out the pair’s favourite players are Toby Greene and Jeremy Cameron, Toby was more than happy to put in a call to wish Margaret and Bob a happy diamond wedding anniversary.
Peter pays for his parents’ memberships every year and also travels from his home in Byron Bay to take Margaret and Bob to at least three games a year.
One of their games is usually a road trip to Canberra to watch their beloved team at UNSW Canberra Oval with the trio all booked in to head to the round 20 match against Brisbane.
They made it to the MCG for the Grand Final last year, as well as the Preliminary Final against Richmond in 2017, and have already decided they’ll head back to the ‘G when they’re next allowed, should the GIANTS make the finals again.
In a lovely ritual, Margaret and her 88-year-old sister drive to the local oval every morning at 9am and walk around it to maintain their fitness before they get a takeaway coffee and drink it in the car.
From everyone at the GIANTS, we wish Margaret and Bob a wonderful wedding anniversary and can’t wait to see them at a game soon.
