GIANTS First Ever Win

This week on the Rewatchables, we are going back… right back to where it all began. 

We go back to when the big, big sound was played after the siren for the very first time.

Yes, it’s the one that all GIANTS fans have been patiently waiting for - the club’s first ever victory.

It took place on a sunny Canberra afternoon in May, 2012 when the GIANTS hosted the Gold Coast Suns.

To help pick apart the memorable occasion, the one and only Chad Cornes will join us with the Port Adelaide premiership defender playing for the GIANTS in the final season of his long and distinguished career in the AFL.

If it wasn’t for the pause in play on the 2020 AFL season, the GIANTS would be once against hosting the Suns in the ACT this weekend.

Instead, GIANTS fans can re-live this historic occasion on Friday night with Fox Footy showing the match from 5pm.

Eight years ago, this match was the first win of the club’s inaugural season and a highly-anticipated match-up with both teams entering the round seven clash with six straight losses.

Coming into the game, the GIANTS average losing margin was 71 points and spirits were high as the club prepared to take on the second youngest list in the AFL.

A spririted performance and strong finish saw the GIANTS triumph for the first time and celebrating with their first premiership points.

Across the shutdown period, the GIANTS media team are re-living our favourite games from the past few years and round seven, 2012 is one of the most famous victories in our short history.

Chad Cornes was one of the GIANTS best in their first ever win in the AFL.
