Veteran ruckman Shane Mumford has revealed what he said to his teammates on the first day he arrived at the club that changed the course of Sydney Derby history.
Mumford was this weeks guest on the Rewatchables podcast, presented by Toyo Tires, which revisited the opening round of the 2014 season when the GIANTS defeated the Swans for the first time.
It was the first game for Mumford and fellow big name recruit Heath Shaw while Leon Cameron was coaching the club for the first time.
There was extra feeling in the match with all the build up being focused on Buddy Franklin opting to join the Swans instead of the league’s newest club.
Mumford, who that same summer switched from the Swans to the GIANTS admits he helped his young team mates walk taller.
“From the moment I got to the football club, I said we were going to beat the Swans in round one,” said Mumford.
“When I first said it, people just laughed at me and thought I was joking but the more and more I said it, it actually got a bit infectious through the group and by the time it got to round one, people actually believed that we could beat them.
“It was amazing to watch how people change over the space of that pre-season to actually believe we were going to win and then to go out and do it the way we did was incredible.”
“It’s certainly a night we won’t forget anytime soon.”
The Rewatchables sees the club’s Twitter account re-live the game online before having a light hearted look at what was happening at that moment in time.
Mumford is the latest in a list of current and former GIANTS stars who’ve joined the Rewatchables podcast to pick apart some of the club’s most famous games in recent years.
