After finishing as minor premiers for the second consecutive year, the UWS GIANTS earned a well-deserved week off from the first week of finals and are now getting set to play Aspley for a spot in the Grand Final.
The GIANTS will take on Queensland’s premier NEAFL team from 12pm at Blacktown International Sportspark this Saturday, September 12.
Despite a dominant few years during the regular season, the UWS GIANTS have never reached a NEAFL Grand Final and it was Aspley who defeated them by 45 points in the corresponding game last year.
According to NEAFL rules, with the UWS GIANTS playing a non-AFL club in the finals, the side are limited to 15 listed players for this week’s game.
22 GIANTS have qualified to play in this weekend’s game including Dylan Addison, Sam Reid, Tim Golds, Jake Barrett, Jed Lamb, Jarrod Pickett, Paul Ahern, Caleb Marchbank, Curtly Hampton, Adam Kennedy, Tom Downie, Jeremy Finlayson, Andrew Phillips, Jack Steele, Pat McKenna, Rory Lobb, Jacob Townsend, Sam Schulz, Lachie Plowman, Tim Mohr, Liam Sumner and Jonny Patton.
The remainder of the UWS GIANTS’ team will come from the PM Capital GIANTS Academy with the following players meeting the eligibility criteria to play: Alex Johnston, Connor Owen-Auburn, Jock Cornell, Matthew Flynn, Thomas Powell, Lachlan Tiziani, Karl Merson, Brandon Clark, Lachlan Flagg, Dylan McDonald, Brydan Hodgson, Thomas Faul and Harry Himmelberg.
The GIANTS must play three under-18 Academy players as part of their top-ups.
There will be a comprehensive preview of this week’s game on gwsgiants.com.au later in the week with live updates on the day on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - @GWSGIANTS.
The final will also be live-streamed on neafl.com.au from 12pm.
The winner of this game will play the winner of the match between the NT Thunder and Sydney University in the 2015 NEAFL Grand Final on the following weekend at a venue yet to be decided.
