The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS have teamed up with NSW Police as they prepare for the 2015 AFL season.
GIANTS Head Coach, Leon Cameron, and Supt Mark Wright from the Police Force Education and Training Command's Leadership Centre mapped out a course dealing with leadership and decision-making under pressure.
GIANTS’ players including the club’s leadership group of Phil Davis, Callan Ward, Heath Shaw, Tom Scully and Shane Mumford, assumed various command roles during a simulated police riot exercise at Parramatta Headquarters.
"We wanted to improve their split-second decision-making processes under extreme pressure," Supt Wright, said, "During that training the players quickly identified issues that relate to both Australian Rules football and policing.
"Areas such as communication, strategy development, logistics and information flow. You could actually see the players developing during the riot scenarios and I am hopeful we can continue to work with them."
The GIANTS Football Operations Manager Simon Katich thanked NSW Police for the opportunity to help broaden the development of its young leaders.
“These sort of programs are a chance for us to gain a greater understanding of the work they do in the community and also develop the players’ leadership skills,” he said.
