Coach Leon Cameron has met homesick forward Cam McCarthy and his father in Perth in a promising sign of bipartisanship between club and homesick forward.

Cameron used the GIANTS’ round-seven trip to Western Australia to catch up with McCarthy, who is on indefinite leave from the club.

The coach also said several GWS players had done the same.

"He's just too good of a person, and too good of a player to be out of AFL footy and where that leads to at the end of the year, no one knows," Cameron said of McCarthy.

"I can't tell you. And nor should I now because the most important thing is that he's starting to get a little bit of an urge about footy again."

McCarthy, 21, was taken by GWS with pick 13 in the 2013 draft and played 21 games for the GIANTS in two seasons.

Despite signing a contract extension in early 2014, McCarthy requested a trade to Fremantle at the end of the season, but the deal was never done.

He has been training with WAFL club South Fremantle.

"He just looks nice and healthy, and bubbly, and I think it's a great initiative that he's doing some work down at South Fremantle," Cameron said.

"There's no doubt that's energising him."
