The GIANTS are hosting an AFL Women’s Athlete Search in Canberra, designed to give female athletes who are currently active in other sports the chance to test their football skills.
The aim of this program is to identify new talent (17 years and over) who are not currently registered as an Australian football player as the GIANTS commence building a team to compete in the National Women’s League in 2017.
Successful athletes could go on to play for the GIANTS’ NWL side in 2017 alongside marquee signings Emma Swanson and Renee Forth.
GIANTS NWL Coach Tim Schmidt said it’s a great opportunity for female athletes around the Australian Capital Territory to test their skills and possibly join the GIANTS.
“The NWL is a huge step forward for the AFL and to give female athletes from all sporting backgrounds the opportunity to join this history making competition is very exciting,” he said.
“The Women’s Athlete Search is about seeing what talent is out there and giving female athlete’s an opportunity to compete at the highest level.”
Athletes will be tested in such skills as 20m sprints, vertical jump, beep test, agility as well as kicking marking, handballing and their ability to compete.
“It’s a unique opportunity for athletes to test themselves out in another sport, to see if the skills they already have can transfer across to AFL,” Schmidt said.
“There’s no reason not to come and give it a go.
“You might surprise yourself and end up as a GIANT in 2017.”
