Young gun Lachie Whitfield is the latest GIANTS player to put pen to paper, re-signing with the club until the end of 2018.
Whitfield’s contract extension comes hot on the heels of ruckman Shane Mumford (2018) and co-captain Callan Ward (2021) also re-committing to the club this season.
The 21-year old Whitfield has played 58 games since arriving at the GIANTS as the number one pick in the 2012 draft.
The smooth moving wingman has been in outstanding form in 2016, averaging over 20 disposals and six marks through the first seven rounds of the season.
Whitfield identified the club’s culture as a key reason in his re-signing: "I’ve been in Sydney four years now and I’ve loved every minute of it,” Whitfield said.
“Going through the hard times of getting thrashed week in and week out really puts things into perspective, particularly when you start to win a few games and mature as a team.
"Right now is the most exciting and enjoyable time of my career and I feel like the signs are good for the future. The culture we’ve developed as a club, along with the fact that so many players have come through together, makes staying here a priority.
“Naturally I miss my family back in Melbourne but Sydney’s home now and we’ve got a family here at the GIANTS - a family I’m very happy to be a part of."
GIANTS General Manager Football Wayne Campbell has welcomed Whitfield’s re-signing.
“Lachie’s a really valuable member of our club so we’re delighted he’s re-committed,” Campbell said.
“He is really developing into a key part of our team – his run and carry on the wing has been crucial and we look forward to his ongoing development for many years to come.
“We’ve had a number of key signings in recent weeks, which follow a significant number of players re-committing last season, which is testament to the culture and direction of the club.”
Lachie will be in action when the GIANTS take on the Gold Coast Suns tomorrow at Spotless Stadium.
