When the three best goals are selected for the Coates Hite Goal of the Year every round, they usually they come from three players, from three different clubs and from three different games.
Steve Johnson ignored the usual conventions during round 23.
Two of his four goals during the GIANTS 37-point win over North Melbourne have been nominated for round 23’s Goal of the Round.
Johnson’s first nomination came from his first goal of the game during the second quarter.
The evergreen 33-year-old received a handball from Jonathon Patton and attempted a left-footed chequeside kick from tight on the boundary, 40 meters out.
Johnson’s kick floated to the top of the goal square where North Melbourne’s Michael Firrito punched the ball away from Rory Lobb.
The loose ball spilled to Johnson who – after following up his miss-kick –shimmied around North’s Luke McDonald and kicked the goal with his right foot from the tip of the goal square.
Johnson’s second nomination came from his second goal, midway through the third quarter.
Tom Scully broke free on the wing and sent the ball inside 50 and into the path of Johnson, who was 45 meters from goal on the right half-forward flank.
The ball kindly bounced up to Johnson who ran to 38 meters out and with pressure from Jack Ziebell and no-one to kick to, calmly put the ball onto his right foot.
The resulting drop punt went straight over the goal umpire’s hat for a goal that nearly lifted the roof off Etihad Stadium.
