St Kilda and Fremantle will join Hawthorn at UNSW Canberra Oval in 2019 with the fixture for the GIANTS’ three home games in Canberra revealed.
The GIANTS will open their Premiership season fixture in Canberra with a Saturday afternoon clash in round five against Fremantle on Saturday, April 20.
A fortnight later in round seven, St Kilda will return to the ACT to play the GIANTS.
The Saints last played in the ACT in 2013, defeating the young GIANTS who were in just their second season.
Fremantle will play in Canberra for the second time in two years, with the home side looking for another victory after a hard-fought win against the Dockers by 31 points in 2018.
There’ll be added spice to the 2019 fixture with ruckman Rory Lobb joining the West Australian club in the off-season.
As revealed earlier in the week, the Hawks will come to the nation’s capital for the very first time in a Friday night blockbuster.
The Hawks have never played at UNSW Canberra Oval but will do so in 2019 for the round 21 fixture on August 9.
It will be the GIANTS’ second-ever home Friday night match at UNSW Canberra Oval following a sell-out clash with the Western Bulldogs in 2017.
GIANTS CEO David Matthews said it was an exciting fixture for the club’s strong member and fan base in the ACT.
“Canberra is truly a home for us and we’re pleased to once again bring first class sporting events to the nation’s capital for the eighth year in a row,” Mr Matthews said.
“There’s no doubt that the Hawks are one of the greatest teams of the last decade and to have them come to town for a Friday night fixture is a great result for the Canberra community.
“We’re thrilled to open the season with the return of the Dockers and another Victorian club in the Saints.
“These games combined with a pre-season JLT Community Series match and NAB AFLW fixture gives our Canberra-based fans the opportunity to watch a number of different clubs across the entire year.
“We enjoy great crowds and the support of passionate and vocal members and fans in the nation’s capital and we expect that to only increase next season.
“Having won our last nine AFL games at the venue it’s clear our players love playing home games at UNSW Canberra Oval."
The GIANTS will also play a pre-season JLT Community Series match at UNSW Canberra Oval against the Adelaide Crows on Friday, March 8 with the AFL Women’s team to host a blockbuster against Geelong the following Friday night on March 15.
