Young GIANTS defender Caleb Marchbank will be sidelined for 6-8 weeks due to an ankle injury.

Marchbank, 19, suffered a grade two syndesmotic injury in the second term of the GIANTS' victory against Geelong on Sunday, tearing two ligaments in his ankle.

No surgery is required with Marchbank to wear a moon boot for the first fortnight as the GIANTS medical staff take a cautious approach.

Marchbank was one of the GIANTS' best performers over the pre-season, playing all three NAB Challenge games and impressing in the GIANTS backline for the opening two rounds of the season.

Meanwhile, Dawson Simpson will not play this weekend after landing heavily on his left shoulder just before half-time in the WSU GIANTS' NEAFL game against Sydney University.

The former Geelong ruckman sat out the second half of the match due to a posterior shoulder dislocation which resulted in some minor internal damage.

The injury is not as bad as initially feared with the 27-year-old to miss the next one to two games.

Draftee Matthew Kennedy didn’t play NEAFL on the weekend and is also set to sit out the next one to two weeks with knee soreness.

In better news, defender Jeremy Finlayson will play NEAFL this week after missing the last month with a knee injury.

Finlayson was sidelined due to a lateral collateral ligament strain suffered in a NEAFL practice match in March.

Wingman Pat McKenna will also line up this week in the NEAFL after being a late withdrawal due to illness.
