Over 50 Year eight students from Malek Fahd Islamic School in Greenacre visited the GIANTS recently as part of the Oxanda nutrition and goal setting program.
The session was run by GIANTS Care, a well-established community initiative that serves the needs of the Western Sydney community through providing opportunities based on the four key pillars of education, employment, health and harmony.
“These sessions are a great way to link the wider community to the Club and equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing,” GIANTS Community Engagement Coordinator Emad Elkheir said.
The students first watched a Mexican cooking demonstration by Chef Daniel, a renowned Australian chef and Owner of Fork’n’Knife and MyLittleDeli.
Chef Daniel shared his secrets of how to prepare healthy meals, encouraging the students to keep the ingredients fresh and to not overcook the food so it still retains the wholesome vitamins and minerals.
“The passion I have is to teach people how to cook. It was great to bring the group together and introduce them to a cuisine they had not had much exposure to before,” Chef Daniel said.
The students then had the opportunity to create their own Mexican dish in a group MasterChef challenge where they could choose from an array of meats and vegetables.
For some, it was the first time they had prepared a meal before.
“Learning how to cook healthy food and how to use a professional kitchen knife was definitely the highlight,” explains Year 8 student Nour Haddad.
“The goal setting session also taught me to set my goals higher than what I can achieve so that I can become a better person.”
The two sessions also emphasised the importance of working collaboratively as a team to achieve success.
“Working alone, you only learn a little but working together you learn much more,” student Hamra Hayat said.
