The GIANTS’ eight-point win against West Coast on Sunday ranks among the best the club has registered in its history, according to coach Leon Cameron.
The GIANTS entered Sunday’s match missing nine of their best 22 players including Stephen Coniglio (ankle), Brett Deledio (calf), Ryan Griffen (ankle), Steve Johnson (knee), Rory Lobb (knee), Devon Smith (knee), Nick Haynes (hamstring), Matt Buntine (knee) and Jacob Hopper (finger).
Star onballer Tom Scully was also omitted pre-game with knee soreness, forcing the GIANTS – who had no midfielders among their emergencies – to bring in key defender Tim Mohr and reshuffle their structure.
But Cameron’s men worked harder and were cleaner with the ball in a painstaking final term – which included eight lead changes – to register their first win against West Coast.
Speaking after the match, Cameron was quick to praise his team’s resilience, stating the performance was his side’s best for 2017.
"In terms of ranking and wins you’re always going to have some good ones but that’s right up there with the great wins of our footy club," Cameron said.
"It’s always hard coming across here to beat the Eagles or the Dockers at Domain Stadium.
"It’s really pleasing, it’s right up there – I thought it was the best we’ve played all year.
"We deserved to win because we played four good quarters."
Cameron said the historic victory was based on a true team effort.
"(The win) was a sign of persistence and our young guys like Matthew Kennedy and Harry Himmelberg and Daniel Lloyd and Tim Mohr when he came in – he hasn’t played for a year – they just kept on keeping on against a really good team on their home deck.
"That was probably the basis of the win, the persistence.
"I think the real pleasing thing is the 22 go out there, they know their role (and) they play their role.
"Every coach is trying to get that at any footy club. We thought we did that well today - we haven’t been doing that particularly well all year."
The GIANTS emerged from the match without any fresh injury concerns and could regain Scully, Lobb and Johnson for next Saturday’s clash against the Bombers at Spotless Stadium.
But after admitting midweek the club took a risk on playing Johnson against the Tigers in round nine after he missed the previous game with a knee concern, Cameron asserted that none of his players would be selected unless fully fit.
"There’s no doubt that Tom Scully, Rory Lobb and Steve Johnson will push their case next week but if they’re not right, they’re not right," Cameron said.
"Tom was probably 90 per cent right but we just didn’t want to bring anyone in that couldn’t go the distance.
"Touch wood, there’s a couple of weeks with players returning in the near future."
