With Hawthorn taking out the VFLW grand final on Saturday, all top-level women’s football competitions have come to a close for 2018.

With a number of GIANTS’ listed players in action across the country here’s the final Women’s Footy Wrap of the season.

AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division

UNSW Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs beat minor premiers Macquarie University by 23 points at Blacktown International Sportspark a fortnight ago.

Tough forward Jacinda Barclay was amongst the Bulldog’s best, kicking a goal as former GIANT Rebecca Privitelli also hit the scoreboard.

Ellie Brush and Amanda Farrugia were amongst the best for the Warriors as Farrugia snuck forward to kick a goal during the third quarter.

UNSW got the jump on the Warriors in the first term to lead by 13 points at quarter time, before they extended their lead to 21 points at the main break.

Macquarie would kick just one goal after half time as the Bulldogs ran out winners.

Meanwhile, former GIANT Pippa Smyth won the Mostyn Medal as the Best and Fairest player in the Premier Division.

Fellow former GIANT Haneen Zreika was level on 17 votes but was ineligible to claim joint honours due to a suspension earlier in the year.

Macquarie University and GIANTS Winter Series representative Laura Russell took out the leading goalkicker award with 31 goals, two ahead of Privitelli.

UNSW Canberra 1st Grade Women’s

With Jodie Hicks’ Belconnen Magpies knocked out in the preliminary final, no currently listed GIANTS were involved in the Grand Final that saw Eastlake beat Queanbeyan by eight points at UNSW Canberra Oval on Sunday, September 9.

Former GIANT Hannah Dunn kicked a goal and was named Queanbeyan’s best on ground in the loss.

GIANTS midfielder Britt Tully claimed her third consecutive Mary Ann Bainrot Medal as Best and Fairest in the competition.

While her team the Gungahlin Jets finished with just three wins, Tully polled 23 votes, five ahead of Eastlake’s Katie Rose.

VFLW

GIANTS Rebecca Beeson and Pepa Randall have played key roles in Hawthorn’s 13 point win over Geelong in Sunday’s VFLW Grand Final.

Beeson collected a game-high 24 disposals, took three marks and laid four tackles while Randall helped keep the cats to just two goals while collecting seven disposals and taking three marks.

The Hawks kicked one goal in each quarter and kept the Cats goalless during the second and third quarters to claim their maiden VFLW premiership.

The premiership capped off a fantastic season for Beeson who was named on the wing in the VFLW Team of the Year.

Across her 11 games, Beeson averaged 21 disposals, four marks, four clearances, five tackles and four inside 50s.

Emma Swanson – whose side the NT Thunder finished their season with a semi final loss to Geelong – was also named on the bench, averaging 19 disposals, three clearances, four tackles, one goal, and one goal assist across her 11 matches.

Phoebe Monahan (Richmond) was the highest polling GIANT in the Lambert-Pearce Medal (VFLW best and fairest), collecting eight votes.
