Losses hurt but draws really sting.

Right now, the GIANTS’ AFLW side is feeling that sting for a second time in their short history.

While they’ll be looking to move on from last Sunday’s rain saturated deadlock with the Crows, the GIANTS will be confronted by the side they drew with in 2017, Fremantle, this Saturday.

The clash at Fremantle Oval is shaping as a season-defining one for both sides, with a loss spelling the end of Grand Final hopes for both sides.

Round five of the AFL Women’s season is shaping as the most crucial for every team in the competition with every side mathematically still in reach of the top two.

For the GIANTS to win and stay within touching distance of a top two finish, they need vice-captain Alicia Eva to continue her hot streak of form.

The 26-year-old again racked up 23 disposals against Adelaide, equalling the club record she set the weekend before against Collingwood.

Eva would have broken her record last Sunday had she not come from the ground, winded by a big clash shortly before time.

The Dockers will also need to be wary of Cora Staunton’s form. Staunton was among the GIANTS’ best, kicking one goal from three scoring shots in tough conditions and providing a great physical presence despite having her nose broken against Collingwood the week before.

Meanwhile, the GIANTS will need to quell the influence of Fremantle’s Kara Donnellan, Dana Hooker and Lisa Webb.

The trio is ranked 15th, 17th and 19th in the competition for average disposals and were among the Dockers’ best in their two wins this season.

After a seven-point loss to Brisbane last Saturday following two wins, the Dockers will be fired up to maintain their close proximity to ladder leaders the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Round 3 – Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Blacktown International Sportspark.

GIANTS 7.1. (43)

Fremantle 6.7 (43)

Goals: McWilliams 2; Walker, Brush, Nguyen, Schmidt, Barclay 1.

THE FIVE POINTS:

1 Alicia Eva is now second in the competition for average disposals per game. The GIANTS vice-captain averages 19.3 possession per game with Eva collecting 23 disposals in the previous two rounds.

2 Despite Fremantle having won two games, they have kicked only one more goal than the GIANTS in 2018. Both sides have been capable of high scores in 2018, with the GIANTS having kicked six goals against Melbourne and seven against Collingwood. The Dockers have kicked six goals twice, also against Melbourne and Collingwood.

3 Cora Staunton has been a more potent forward in 2018 than 2017 All Australians Tayla Harris, Sabrina Frederick-Traub and Darcy Vescio. Staunton has had eight scoring shots in 2018 while Harris has had four, Vescio six and Frederick-Traub six. After a solid performance against the Crows, Staunton could be set for a big haul this Saturday.

4 This will be the first time a GIANTS men’s or women’s side has played at Fremantle Oval. The Dockers have won just one of their three games at the historic ground.

5 Fremantle’s Alex Williams is set to make her first appearance against her former club. Williams left the GIANTS at the end of 2017 and was signed by the Dockers as a free agent. Having played every game so far in 2018 the defender has averaged 5.5 disposals per game.
