The GIANTS have completed a three-day training camp in the Blue Mountains with the camp testing the group physically and mentally as they completed a gruelling trail run as well as completing leadership activities.
The camp also gave the new recruits and draftees a chance to get to know the rest of the playing group.
It wasn’t all hard work though, as the players had a peaceful swing on the Leura Gold Course with co-captain Callan Ward sinking an incredible putt form the fairway.
The 192-gamer said the two nights at the Fairmont Resort in Leura was a great opportunity for the GIANTS to get to know more about their new teammates.
“We’re in our own backyard, the Blue Mountains, which is beautiful,” he said.
“It’s great to get out here with all the boys, especially with the first-year players and to get to know them.
“We’ve played some golf and we’ve had some meetings so it’s been good.”
Ward has been impressed by the young GIANTS’ efforts during pre-season so far, especially a few of the club’s second year players.
“Tim Taranto is on fire, he smashed his 3km time and is running around like crazy at training,” he said.
“Harry Perryman is a guy with elite foot skills, can run and is tough. Will Setterfield is going along very nicely and I think he’ll be a star in the future.”
Ward has begun his 11th AFL pre-season and after an impressive season in 2017, is looking to put his best foot forward on the track as he aims to play his 200th game in 2018.
“I don’t like to look too far ahead, instead I just try to focus on the training and train hard,” he said.
“In terms of round one I can’t wait to play the Dogs but we’ve still got a few months to go before then.”
The GIANTS begin their JLT Community Series against Collingwood at the UNSW Canberra Oval on Thursday, March 1, 2018.
