Co-captain Callan Ward is a confirmed starter to take on Geelong on Saturday afternoon with Toby Greene a chance of a return.
Ward is set to line-up for his first game of the season after overcoming a lateral collateral strain in his knee, suffered in the first JLT community series match.
“He’s a certain starter at this stage,” said GIANTS General Manager of Football Wayne Campbell.
“He’ll have get through training - as we always say. He potentially could have played last week, we were a bit conservative with him but will definitely play this weekend.”
Greene has struggled to overcome a minor calf strain that has kept him on the sidelines for the past fortnight but still remains a chance of taking on the Cats.
“He’s been a little bit slower than Cal, we’re still yet to see,” Campbell said.
“He’s progressing a little slower … he’s a chance for this week but at this stage not as certain as Callan.”
Veteran Brett Deledio missed last week’s match against the Tigers and will be sidelined for around three to four weeks of football with a calf strain suffered at training last week.
“It was going pretty well and that’s generally the time he does it unfortunately,” Campbell said.
“He played some good footy, he’s on reduced loads but Wednesday at training just felt something, we felt it was going to be ok … but he’s got a small nick in his calf and will probably be three or four weeks from now."
Tommy Sheridan had an unlucky club debut, injuring his calf in the first quarter of his first match for the GIANTS on Saturday.
“He has a small nick but he’s had some calf troubles previously so we’ll be reasonably conservative with him,” Campbell said.
“We’re not sure on the timeline just yet but he obviously won’t play this week or the next couple of weeks.”
While a timeline to return to the field for Harry Perryman is yet to be determined, he has started some light exercise as he recovers from a punctured lung suffered in round one.
In other news, Jonny Patton is currently in the United States visiting Bill Knowles as he continues his rehabilitation from his third knee reconstruction.
Knowles is a world-renowned expert in reconditioning, having worked with athletes and teams from across the globe at the Olympic, world-class and professional levels.
“He did it the last time he did his knee and really got something out of it,” Campbell said.
“He’s training really well, we think this is just the final piece to go over there because he has a good relationship with Bill and his program is so well recognised.
“We don’t know when he’s going to play, it will be the middle of the year, but Jon’s progressing well.”
