Young midfielder Harry Perryman will miss several weeks with a punctured lung after a brave collision in Sunday’s win over Essendon.

Perryman collided with Bomber Patrick Ambrose as both players ferociously attacked a loose ball late in the second quarter. He played out the quarter before reporting difficulties breathing at half-time where he was assessed by the club doctors and on-site Paramedics.

“It was a really courageous by Harry in terms of his attack on the ball and then to stay on for a couple of minutes afterwards to contest the ball with a pneumothorax, which is a punctured lung,” said General Manager of Football Wayne Campbell.

“Our doctors did a really good job at half time, they could see he couldn’t breathe, called the medics and took him to hospital.

“He’s up and about and at the club today but will certainly miss this week and subsequent weeks. There’ll be some further checks done in the next couple of days and couple of weeks to see how long he is.

“He hasn’t broken a rib which I think is interesting or unique in this circumstance. They tend to be punctured by the broken rib but Harry doesn’t have that so we don’t have to wait for that to heal, it will just be the lung.”

Defender Lachlan Keeffe has escaped serious injury after a scare early in Sunday’s match. Keeffe limped off before returning to the ground and playing as a deep forward, finishing the game with three goals.

“It was really courageous by him but also by our medical staff to tape him up and get him back out there,” Campbell said.

“It’s good news there - it’s jarred and was a bit sore after the game but he’ll train tomorrow and I think he’s a reasonable chance to play this weekend.”

Josh Kelly and Nick Haynes will train tomorrow evening in a bid to play in the round two clash against the reigning Premiers with both listed as tests.

“Josh and Nick Haynes are probably in the same boat,” Campbell said, “Nick played three quarters at NEAFL level on Sunday.

“We’ve been reasonably conservative with them, they’ve done a fair body of work. They’ll train tomorrow, put their hand up and are a chance to play this weekend."

Co-captain Callan Ward has unsurprisingly put his hand up to take the field this week but Campbell said the hard-nut it still a fortnight away from a return after injuring the lateral collateral ligament in his knee.

“Wardy’s coming along really well,” Campbell said.

“He’s out of a hard brace, into a soft brace and has been doing some running. He does change of direction tomorrow.

“He’s coming along really well, he wants to play this week but won’t play this week and is probably two or three weeks away.”

Zac Langdon is also looking to return sooner rather than later as he comes back from a navicular injury suffered in pre-season.

“Zac is back running, he’s been on the Alter-G and is on the ground this week,” Campbell said.

“He’s probably a week or so behind Callan but coming back really well from his foot problem."

The GIANTS take on the West Coast Eagles on Saturday at Optus Stadium.
