Match Information:
Port Adelaide v GIANTS
Sunday, November 3 at 5:05pm (AEDT)
Alberton Oval | Kaurna Country
State of Play:
The GIANTS will enter the final round of the 2024 season looking to close out their campaign on a high following an inconsistent campaign.
One of the competition’s youngest sides, the GIANTS have matched it with some of the league’s best sides for large portions of games but their inconsistency across four quarters has seen them often fall short of victory.
Heading to Adelaide for their final game of the season, the GIANTS will be looking to upset the seventh-placed Power on their own home deck ahead of their finals campaign.
The return of dashing defender Cambridge McCormick was a welcome sight last week after missing six games with an ankle injury. The GIANTS will be hoping McCormick can show once again on Sunday why she’s one of the side’s most improved and crucial players in her new role as an attacking defender.
Further fueling their desire to end the season on a strong note, the GIANTS will be out to celebrate former skipper Alicia Eva on Sunday in her 75th AFLW game.
The Opposition:
Port Adelaide will enter Sunday’s clash as one of the hottest teams in the competition as they search for their sixth straight win.
Over the past five weeks the Power has beaten the Tigers, Blues, Eagles, Magpies and Saints to lock themselves firmly inside the top eight with one round remaining.
Almost guaranteed to make finals regardless of Sunday’s result, the Power are on the verge of playing in its first ever AFLW finals series.
In their most recent outing the Power made light work of the Gold Coast Suns with a 34-point win at People First Stadium.
Abbey Dowrick (22 touches, a goal), Kirsty Lamb (16 touches, a goal) and Gemma Houghton (10 touches, two goals) were all strong contributors in the win, while Power debutant Jo Miller (13 touches, two goals) was impressive in her first game.
Rounding out the home and away season at home, the Power will be looking to continue their strong form to make it six wins in a row to guarantee themselves their first ever finals appearance.
Recent History:
The last and only time the two sides have faced off was in last year’s corresponding round 10 fixture at Alberton Oval in which the Power charged to a 58-point win.
Sending off AFLW star Erin Phillips off into retirement in style, the Power were clinical in the 13.10 (88) to 4.6 (30) victory.
The GIANTS were led by a trio of familiar faces in the loss, with Bec Beeson (22 touches, six clearances), Zarlie Goldsworthy (21 touches, two goals), and Tarni Evans (21 touches) all starring.
In The Mix:
If the GIANTS choose to make any changes this week then they’ll have a few options waiting in the wings, with Courtney Murphy, Caitlin Miller and Jemma Ramsdale all available of called upon.
Untried youngster Indigo Linde is also available for selection after recovering from a calf strain which kept her sidelined for the last six weeks of her debut AFLW season.
