Aiden Bonar, pick 11 in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, will make his AFL debut when the GIANTS take on Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Bonar will become the 91st player to pull on a GIANTS jumper with the big-bodied midfielder the club’s sixth player to make their AFL debut this season.
The 19-year-old’s debut means every player the GIANTS selected in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft has played senior football this season, with Bonar following in the footsteps of fellow draftees Zac Langdon (pick 56), Nick Shipley (pick 65), Sam Taylor (pick 28) and Brent Daniels (pick 27).
The GIANTS used their first selection at last year’s Draft to select Bonar with pick 11.
The 188cm midfielder rocketed up the draft order late in the season after two knee reconstructions in the previous two seasons.
He is a powerfully built, versatile midfielder who excels at stoppages and has a burst of speed away from congestion. He is strong overhead and very competitive with an appetite to tackle.
Bonar has played 14 games in the NEAFL this season and was named best on ground in the GIANTS’ draw with Brisbane a fortnight ago when he had 22 touches, seven tackles and two goals.
He followed it up with 25 touches, five tackles and a goal in a big win over Sydney University last weekend.
The GIANTS take on Carlton at Etihad Stadium at 1:10pm on Sunday with live coverage on Channel 7 in NSW and the ACT and Fox Footy nationally.
The final team to take on the Blues will be named at 5pm on Friday.
