“To be honest I think the loss was flattering,” GIANTS VFL Coach Wayne Cripps said post-match.

“We were nowhere near our best, but the positive is, and to the boys' credit, we kept ourselves in the game and nearly snatched a win.”

Cripps shared his assessments of the AFL listed players who played in the match.

AFL Listed Players:

20. James Peatling

16 disposals, 1 goal

He came back and gave us real energy up and down the ground. He used his speed, and he had his opportunities on goal.

24. Harry Rowston

26 disposals, 7 clearances

It was the type of performance we’ve become accustomed to. He led the way at the stoppages and his ability to spread from the contest is only getting better. He got us going with his clearance work and is continuing to build every week.

29. Cameron Fleeton

32 disposals, 8 marks

I say it every week, but he’s just so reliable every week. He defends like his life depends on it and his leadership is one of our strongest assets at VFL level. He’s doing everything right at the moment.

30. Matt Flynn

2 goals, 14 disposals, 28 hit-outs

He’s brought back some great leadership and the boys love playing with him. He brings a great energy and work rate to the squad.

31. Toby McMullin

2 goals, 17 disposals

Once again took another step forward. His last month has been great, and his confidence is evidence of that. He’s continuing to understand what it takes to be an elite player at a high level.

35. Max Gruzewski

2 goals, 6 marks

It was a tough day in terms of the way the ball was moving forward. We didn’t help our key forwards with our ball movement, but Max competed hard and when he had the opportunity he converted.

41. Nick Madden

20 hit-outs, 8 disposals

For a first-year ruck he’s continuing to compete at a great standard. Being able to play alongside Matt Flynn and Kieren Briggs in recent weeks has been invaluable for him.

42. Jason Gillbee

15 disposals, 7 marks

Once again, he’s learning his craft and making the wing role his own. From a fundamental and craft point of view he’ll continue to develop, but for a first-year player he’s doing a lot of good things.

45. Wade Derksen

2 goals, 5 marks, 20 disposals

Again, hit the scoreboard for us. He had a tough day with the way the ball was moving but made the most of his opportunities when they arrived. We’re getting snippets of the really athletic forward he is, and I don’t think we have a better kick at goal, he kicks at goal as good as anyone we’ve got.

Billy’s been playing a really important role on the wing and is a very coachable player. His ability to adapt to a role and do what the team needs is brilliant. He’s getting reward for effort, got on the scoreboard, and has become a really important player for us in the VFL.
