When and Where:
Saturday, May 27 at 4:35pm
GMHBA Stadium | Wadawurrung Country
What it Means for the GIANTS:
After winning three of Adam Kingsley's first 10 games in charge – the GIANTS now sit at 3-7. The GIANTS overcame the odds to secure a famous 19-point win over the Cats at GMHBA Stadium in 2021, and will look to replicate that performance again this weekend.
Last Time We Met:
A five-goal haul from Jeremy Cameron lifted Geelong to a convincing 53-point win over the GIANTS in Canberra last year. Cameron had three goals by quarter-time and finished with five, helping the Cats lead from start to finish and win 12.15 (88) to 4.11 (35) at Manuka Oval. Isaac Cumming was the GIANTS’ best, collecting 29 disposals and 12 rebounds, with 25 of his possessions coming by foot.
Where’s the opposition at?
The reigning premiers currently hold a 5-5 record and are holding onto their top-eight spot through percentage after falling to Fremantle by 29 points at Optus Stadium last weekend. Geelong coach Chris Scott is optimistic Patrick Dangerfield could return from a hamstring injury this weekend, with Gary Rohan, Sam De Koning, Ollie Henry and Cameron Guthrie also in contention to return.
GIANTS Player to Watch:
After being elevated from co-captain in 2022 to standalone skipper in 2023, Toby Greene showed why he is not only one of the best players in the AFL, but an inspired choice as captain. The dual All-Australian will celebrate his 200th AFL game this weekend, becoming the first player drafted to the club to reach the milestone. The 29-year-old was drafted to the GIANTS in 2011 at pick 11, receiving a Rising Star nomination in his first season as a midfielder. A move forward in 2016 saw him receive his first All Australian honours and win the Kevin Sheedy Medal. Greene is currently averaging 18 disposals, 4.8 marks and 2.8 goals for the GIANTS this season.
In the Mix:
The GIANTS will be forced to make at least three changes for the trip to GHMBA Stadium. Harry Himmelberg and Nick Haynes have entered the AFL's 12-day concussion protocols, while Josh Kelly will spend a period on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring strain. Josh Fahey (43 disposals) was the stand-out performer for the GIANTS as they recorded their fourth consecutive win at GIANTS Stadium over the weekend. Veteran Lachlan Keeffe and Callum Brown could provide cover for Himmelberg (who was playing as a defender) and Haynes, while Wade Derksen, Matthew Flynn, Daniel Lloyd and Harry Rowston will all be in contention after also impressing in the VFL.
