The Penrith Swans are the latest community club to adopt the GIANTS name and colours, following in the footsteps of their club ambassador Shane Mumford.

Penrith joins other Western Sydney clubs including the Macarthur GIANTS, the Concord GIANTS and the Auburn GIANTS who have partnered with the AFL’s newest team.

The Penrith Swans will be known as the Penrith GIANTS when they compete in the Greater Western Sydney Junior competition this season.

Club ambassador Shane Mumford, who joined the GIANTS after playing 79 games with the Sydney Swans, welcomed the re-branding.

“I think the name change is a fantastic idea,” Mumford said.

“This will be my second season at the club now and I haven’t looked back since swapping from the Swans to the GIANTS.

“Penrith Juniors are a great club and I always enjoy heading there as part of my ambassador role. It’s great to have them on board now officially."

Mumford won the 2014 Kevin Sheedy Medal following an outstanding first season at the club, averaging 36 hit-outs per game.

Penrith GIANTS president Kylie O'Connor said aligning with the GIANTS would secure the long-term future of the juniors club.

“This is not a decision we took likely, but it was certainly well supported across the whole club,” Mrs O’Connor said.

“Many of our players wear GIANTS gear at training and given our base in Western Sydney it seemed like the perfect fit.

“There's an exciting feeling around the club and we look forward to continuing our great relationship with the GIANTS well into the future."

The Penrith GIANTS are among more than 20 clubs around the world who have adopted the GIANTS name.

The club is hosting a registration day at Greygums Oval, Cranebrook on Saturday, February 7 from 11am-2pm.
