The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS will tonight unveil their new mascot, `G-Man’, on the big screen during the club’s first NAB Cup matches at Blacktown International Sportspark.
The GIANTS asked members of their junior fan club to come up with a name for the mascot. Olivia Johns, 8, of Beaumont Hills and Jack Woodford, 6, of Orange both nominated the name `G-Man’.
Chief Executive David Matthews said the GIANTS were a family club and G-Man would help engage with children in particular and bring a sense of fun to matches.
“We had more than 200 responses from young fans when we asked them to help name the mascot. Olivia and Jack both came up with what we believe is a great name – G-Man- which captures his personality,” Matthews said.
“G-Man will not only be amongst the fans on match day but will also be visible in the community as we continue to build our presence across Greater Western Sydney and the ACT in the months and years to come.”
The concept for the mascot was developed by the GIANTS and designed by advertising and marketing agency, McCorkell and Associates. CEO Scott McCorkell said the mascot needed to represent the GIANTS’ brand and name.
“It is challenging to create a mascot to represent the GIANTS as there isn’t a natural physical representation,” he said. “It needed to be something that wasn’t only a giant but a character that was capable of being lovable.
“I think he’s a happy friendly character and someone that everyone can look up to and can connect to.”
G-Man will make his first official appearance on the ground during the Sydney Derby between the GIANTS and the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium on March 24. Olivia and Jack and their families will attend the match as guests of the GIANTS.
