Soon to be GIANTS AFLW forward Cora Staunton has finished up her duties with Carnacon in style by winning her sixth All-Ireland senior ladies club football title on Sunday night. 

Staunton became the GIANTS’ first international draftee when she was selected at pick 45 in the recent AFLW draft, but before coming over to join her new teammates for pre-season training, the Gaelic football star had the equivalent of an AFL Grand Final on her hands.

During the All-Ireland Women's Final, Staunton scored seven of her team’s 15 points to lead them to victory over Mourneabbey on a night that could not have gone better. 

As well as winning six All-Ireland titles, the 33-year-old has put together an impressive resume including nine All Star Awards, three Division One Titles and fifteen Mayo County Club titles. 

The win didn’t come without controversy with two of Staunton’s fellow teammates being sin binned in the final moments of the match, with Carnacon ending up winning with only thirteen players on the field. 

Staunton and her team held on until the final whistle, giving her the opportunity to raise the silverware again.

When she joins the GIANTS, Staunton is expected to slot into a role in the forward line. Staunton ended up at the GIANTS after a discussion with fellow Irishman and now defensive coach for the AFL team Nick Walsh. 

“He taught me a little bit about the game in the last year and has been great support for me,” said Staunton in a recent radio interview in Ireland. 

Staunton will land in Sydney later this week ready to embark on the next chapter of her glittering sporting career.
