The opening round of the AFLW Summer Series between the GIANTS and Swans was highlighted by a dominant display from the two GIANTS’ sides.

GIANTS Orange defeated Swans White by 59 points while GIANTS Charcoal defeated Swans Red by 69 points.

Despite the on-and-off rain and wet conditions, the skills were strong and the quality was high.

Game one between GIANTS Orange and Swans White started as a tight contest with the Swans kicking the first goal, but the class and experience from listed GIANTS Tait Mackrill and Georgia Garnett was advantageous for the GIANTS who went on to dominate the remainder of the match.

A stronger and slightly older GIANTS Charcoal were too strong for Swans Red, with 20-year-old Kiana Woolley-Blain and unselected GIANT Georgie Fowler scoring seven goals between them.

The talent coming through from Canberra was evident in Woolley-Blain and Kate Woodward, while the talent out of the local AFL Sydney competition was represented by GIANTS protégées in Grace Painting and Eilish Sheerin.

“It was great to see the talent out on display,” said GIANTS Head of Academies Jason Saddington.

“Given the conditions and that it was the first time these teams have really come together, we were really pleased with what they put out there.”

The series will continue this weekend at Blacktown International SportsPark when the two GIANTS’ sides go head-to-head in what is sure to be a competitive and highly contested match.

Matches will be live streamed via the AFL NSW/ACT Facebook page.
