Match Preview: Round 6 v Lions

The GIANTS look to tame the Lions at Manuka Oval.

    When and Where:

    Saturday, April 22 at 4:35pm
    Ngunnawal Country | Manuka Oval

What it Means for the GIANTS:

GIANTS coach Adam Kingsley was a relieved man after his side recorded their second win for the year at Norwood Oval last weekend. Harry Himmelberg had a final two minutes to remember, taking a spectacular contested mark, kicking the winning major and making a desperate save on the goal line to seal a famous two-point win for the GIANTS over Hawthorn.

    03:25

Kingsley will be hoping the victory will be a catalyst to kickstart the GIANTS’ season, with his side having lost their past seven games at their home away from home despite enjoying excellent crowd support at Manuka Oval.

"We want to turn Canberra into a fortress for us but that's difficult to do if you're not winning games," Kingsley said during the week.

"We want to try and rectify that as soon as possible but there's a way to do it and I feel the blueprint for us was the Hawthorn game and our ability to step in, pressure tackle and keeping it at the level it needs to be every week."

    Last Time We Met:

Brisbane defeated the GIANTS by 40 points at Manuka Oval in round 18 last year. Despite three late goals by the GIANTS, they were able to stifle their ball movement the entire match. The GIANTS could thank full-back Sam Taylor for being within reach during the first half, as he won the ball back a staggering 12 times from intercepts in the opening two quarters alone. Taylor (15 intercepts from 20 disposals) and Harry Himmelberg (10 intercepts from 30) held back the tidal wave of inside 50s, while Toby Greene (four goals) played a lone hand at the other end.

    Where’s the opposition at?

Joe Daniher put on a forward line clinic in Brisbane's 75-point demolition of North Melbourne last weekend.Daniher finished with five goals from 13 marks in a best afield performance as the Lions dominated play to record a 22.20 (152) to 12.5 (77) win and move into the top eight.

    GIANTS Player to Watch:

Harry Himmelberg was the hero as the GIANTS defeated the Hawks at Norwood Oval. Not only did Himmelberg kick the winning goal, but he also subsequently prevented Hawthorn from scoring its own winner with a save on the defensive goal line with only seconds remaining. "He's a terrific player, as we know. He's got capabilities at both ends of the ground, so he's perfectly suited for a role of 'the game's close, go behind the ball'. In the same breath, he won us the game and he saved us the game, too,” Adam Kingsley said of Himmelberg post-match. The 26-year-old finished the game with 12 disposals, two goals and another Mark of the Year contender.

    In the Mix:

Midfielder Tom Green has been ruled him out of the clash with Brisbane in Canberra this weekend after accepting a one-week suspension for rough conduct after a heavy tackle on Hawthorn's Josh Ward during the GIANTS' last-gasp triumph on Sunday at Norwood Oval. The loss of Green, who is fifth in the competition for contested possessions after five weeks, may be offset by the return of Harry Perryman, who has been out since suffering a hamstring injury in the opening round. Defender Leek Aleer could also return from a quad injury he sustained in the final training session before round one, with Toby Bedford also available after recovering from a hamstring injury suffered during the pre-season. Small forward Brent Daniels was managed last weekend and could return ahead of the GIANTS’ trip to Canberra.

Lions Record Tough Win Over GIANTS

Brisbane recorded a 21-point win over the GIANTS in Canberra.

Charlie Cameron put on a show in front of goal as Brisbane defeated the GIANTS by 21 points to make it three in a row and take their season ledger to 4-2.

The GIANTS' winless streak in their home away from home at Manuka Oval has extended to eight games as Cameron booted seven goals to lead his side to the 16.12 (108) 13.9 (87) win.

A hamstring injury to All-Australian defender Sam Taylor only added more pain for the GIANTS.

An element of lethargy snuck into the Lions late, opening the door for another potential surge from the GIANTS but it wasn't to be.

    Vote for your MVG

Among Cameron's seven goals was another rebel Goal of the Year contender, while at the other end of the ground Daniel Rich was at his aggressive, rebounding best.

Without contested beast Tom Green, who watched on from the sidelines due to suspension, experienced midfielders Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio took charge at the contest. Kelly, who had 22 disposals to half time, was causing Brisbane coach Chris Fagan enough of a headache to send Josh Dunkley his way in the second half, ultimately finishing the game with 41 touches (17 contested) and 618m gained.

Coniglio wasn't far behind for the night, with 38 disposals (14 contested), nine clearances and 10 score involvements, as one of the GIANTS' best.

Brisbane controlled the air, leading the contested marks 12 to four at half-time and ending the game plus-six in the metric. A total of 10 different Lions registered at least one contested mark for the game, led by Jack Payne with three, while the GIANTS worked to make the ground their own, but it did take some time for them to get their forward pressure game going.

That lack of forward pressure early from the GIANTS handed the Lions the chance to generate fast slingshot attack, leading to the latter's opening three goals by way of Lincoln McCarthy, Eric Hipwood and Charlie Cameron. Not even the intercepting prowess of Sam Taylor could quell the speed and efficiency with which the visitors used the ball to attack.

While Brisbane's attack was all about speed and flair, the GIANTS often looked slow and stagnant when winning the ball in the back half, giving the likes of Harris Andrews and Jack Payne time to set up and assist one-another in defence.

Meanwhile the GIANTS, despite boasting All-Australian defender Taylor, Isaac Cumming and the emerging Jack Buckley, were too often caught in precarious one-on-one situations, unable to break away to support teammates in the air.

The GIANTS rallied in moments off the back of speed from the back half and good decision making by their stars. The GIANTS broke even in the second quarter and slotted three-straight through Brent Daniels and Jesse Hogan late in the third, but any lapse of concentration was punished – and harshly – by Brisbane.

    A GIANT future

GIANTS fans saw their club's future late in the opening term as 19-year-old Finn Callaghan and recent No.1 pick Aaron Cadman teamed up to create the home side's first goal. Callaghan found space on the wing and sent a pinpoint kick deep inside 50 to the strong hands of Cadman, who kicked truly and got the GIANTS up and about.
