The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS have unveiled the jumper they will wear for the club’s historic home matches in Canberra in 2012.
GIANTS players Phil Davis, Jonathon Patton and Josh Bruce showed off the jumpers during a visit to Lyneham High School in the ACT today.
It followed a competition asking locals to submit designs for the jumper they believe the GIANTS should wear in Canberra for the club’s inaugural year in the AFL competition in 2012.
The players presented a jumper to the winner of the competition John Gerrard, whose design features an image of Canberra’s iconic Black Mountain Tower, as well as jumpers to a number of the GIANTS’ 2011 foundation members.
Canberra born GIANT Phil Davis also presented a jumper to the ACT Sports Minister Andrew Barr and thanked him and the ACT Government for all their support to bring the club to the nation’s capital.
The GIANTS will wear the jumper for their three home matches in Canberra in 2012 beginning with its first match at Manuka Oval against the Western Bulldogs on April 28.
“The GIANTS are really looking forward to playing in Canberra next year and for local born players like myself and Josh Bruce it will be a real highlight to play at Manuka Oval,” he said.
GIANTS Chief Operating Officer Richard Griffiths also thanked the ACT Government for their support and said the GIANTS were looking forward to their AFL Community Camp in March ahead of the NAB Cup and three home matches for premiership points.
“For the first time Canberra will have a genuine AFL Club presence with the GIANTS and we look forward to great support from the local community who have proved just how passionate and knowledgeable they are about Australian football,” Griffiths said.
The ACT Minister for Sport Andrew Barr congratulated the local winners of the jumper design competition. “It is exciting to see that when GWS play in front of their Canberra crowd, that they will do so in a special Canberra GIANTS jumper,” he said.
The players also helped launch the GIANTS 2012 membership packages during a visit to the Canberra Centre where they met local shoppers and encouraged them to become GIANTS members and be part of history in 2012.
The GIANTS attracted more than 5000 foundation members from the ACT in 2011 and have launched a range of specially tailored packages for ACT members.
“An ACT GIANTS membership package is great value and we encourage people to sign up to ensure they have a guaranteed seat at Manuka Oval for what will be three great matches in 2012 against the Western Bulldogs, the Gold Coast Suns and Melbourne,” Griffiths said.
