Key forward Jake Riccardi is the NAB AFL Rising Star nominee for round 15.
Riccardi has quickly become an important part of the GIANTS’ forward line with 20-year old kicking six goals in his first two games.
Having starred in his debut against West Coast with two goals and 10 marks, Riccardi backed it up last weekend against Fremantle by kicking four majors and taking nine marks.
Having been overlooked at the draft twice, the 195cm forward played for VFL club Werribee last year where he impressed the GIANTS recruiters enough for them to select him at pick 51 in the draft.
Coach Leon Cameron was full of praise for the work of his recruiting team as well as how well Riccardi has adapted to the AFL.
“He’s a terrific young kid who’s come a long way in a short period of time,” said Cameron.
“He’s got a huge motor, he’s got a few tricks and some forward nous and when you can do that over and over again it makes it hard to defend.
“He’s going to have his ups and downs, but he’s hit the ground running in the last fortnight and his enthusiasm is infectious.
“Hopefully we see a long long career at the GIANTS for Jake.”
Riccardi is the second GIANT to be nominated for the award this season after his housemate Tom Green was recognised for his performance in round four against Collingwood.
The GIANTS play Carlton this Thursday night at Metricon Stadium in a big round 15 clash.
