The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS draftees hit the track for the first time today at the club’s main training session.
Eighteen-year-old Liam Sumner, who was drafted by the GIANTS with pick number 10 from the Sandringham Dragons in Victoria, said that he enjoyed his first training session with his new teammates today.
“I was excited about getting out on the track for thefirst time with all the boys, so that we could get stuck in to all the drills and get around each other.
“We were pretty nervous when we started off… but as soon as we got out there we fitted in really well with the other players.
“We did about 70 per cent of the training today.”
Sumner said that he was aware of the GIANT challenge that lay ahead for the new draftees and that the lift in intensity from TAC Cup level, where he has played previously was enormous.
“There’s a big difference between this and the TAC Cup system. Every player here trains with a really high intensity and does every drill flat out.
“I want to get myself in to a proper gym routine so I can start putting on some size and weight. Apart from that I’ll just have to train as hard as I can.
“It’s unreal knowing that they (Kevin Sheedy and Mark Williams) are out on the ground at the same time as me and I just have to embrace every moment of it.”
