In just three days the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS will take to the field for the inaugural Sydney Derby and the club’s first match in the AFL competition.
Tomorrow, the club will finalize their squad for the match and tell their young playing group who has cemented their place in AFL history as the first 22 men to run out as GIANTS in the AFL.
GIANTS Co-Captain Phil Davis commented earlier this week that his young teammates would need to perform in Wednesday’s main training session to secure their spot in the team.
“For the young blokes, they’ll be really pushing for selection.
“Wednesday’s training session will be a great opportunity for those last four, five or six spots to be up for grabs.”

Now, following the session, GIANTS players have a nervous wait ahead as the club’s coaching panel decides who will play against the Swan’s on Saturday night.
One of these players is eighteen year old Will Hoskin-Elliott who was selected by the GIANTS with the fourth overall pick in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft.
“Selection is tomorrow. I haven’t really thought about it too much going in to today’s training session.
“This week is a big week for the club but mostly the team has just been going about things as normal, working hard and hoping to be selected for Round 1.
“If you spend your time worrying about selection then you’re not focusing hard enough on what you’re doing and then you won’t train as well.”
Hoskin-Elliott said that feedback from the coaches over the pre season has been positive and that running out in the GIANTS’ first match on Saturday night would be an enormous honor.
“The feedback to me so far has been that I’m training pretty well so I’ve just been focused on keeping that up and improving until Round 1 selection.
“If I get to run out on Saturday night it will be a dream come true. It will be an amazing feeling.”
