Tim Golds will become Greater Western Sydney's 35th AFL debutant for 2012 when the GIANTS take on the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium this Saturday.
An athletic, running defender, Golds was selected by the GIANTS in 2010 as a 17-year-old priority selection. He remained in Victoria to complete his VCE in 2011, playing for Xavier College and the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup.
Golds was a member of the 2010 AIS AFL Academy squad and was awarded the Ben Mitchell Medal for showing outstanding qualities on and off the field.
The GIANTS have also been bolstered by the return of big man Israel Folau, while Shaun Edwards, Andrew Phillips, Sam Darley and Adam Tomlinson also return to the side.
The club announced yesterday that co-captain Callan Ward had been ruled out for at least the next two weeks with the early stages of Osteitis Pubis, while Toby Greene will miss the next one to two weeks with groin soreness. Taylor Adams will also miss at least one match because of a back injury.
Scans this week also showed abnormalities in Sam Frost's hip and he will now meet with surgeons but is likely to miss the remainder of the season and number one draft pick Jonathon Patton will also see surgeons after injuring his shoulder in the GIANTS’ win over Port Adelaide.
Head Coach Kevin Sheedy said that while the GIANTS were pleased with last week’s 34-point win over Port Adelaide at SKODA Stadium, the club had been forced to make six changes due to injury.
“It's disappointing to lose your captain, particularly when Callan had played in every game this year and a few other boys like Toby Greene. However, with that loss comes an opportunity for someone else to step up,” he said.
“Tim Golds has been putting in some impressive performances with the UWS GIANTS in the NEAFL and I’m really pleased to give him the opportunity to make his debut.
“Gold Coast played 34 debutants last year and this weekend will see us play our 35th. I’ve been really impressed to see how each of these young players have gone about the opportunity presented to them.
“Izzy coming back into the side is a big plus. His work in the ruck has been very pleasing over the last month and with Dean Brogan stepping away from senior football for the rest of this season it gives him and Andrew Phillips an opportunity to take on this role.
Sheedy said the club was really looking forward to playing the Suns who they have already defeated twice this year including in a NAB Cup match at Wagga and the round seven clash at Manuka Oval.
"We're keen to chalk up another win following last week's great effort against Port Adelaide and finish the season strongly," Sheedy said.
