The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS have today finalised the club’s inaugural 2012 playing list with the selection of 18-year-old key position player Sam Frost in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
Recruited from Sandringham Dragons, Frost impressed in this year’s Under 18 National Carnival for Vic Metro. At 194cm, Frost is athletic for his size with the versatility to play both forward and back.
Stephen Silvagni, National List and Recruitment Manager, said that the GIANTS were pleased they were able secure Frost through the Rookie draft.
“We feel as though Sam was unlucky not to be drafted last month. Unfortunately through injury he wasn’t able to test at the NAB AFL Draft Combine and later draft selections can often be difficult to pick.
“We’re very happy that we were able to select him today. Sam’s an extremely athletic player for his size and is another strong key position player to add to the list.
“He should do well in our club environment having played much of his junior footy with a number of new draftees at both the Sandringham Dragons and Vic Metro.”
The GIANTS also had the first six selections in the NAB AFL Pre-season Draft today but elected not to use any of these selections.
Silvagni explained that this was a list management decision as the club looks ahead to 2012.
“We need to look forward in terms of what we’ve got coming through next year. We envisage we might have up to 10 new players next year including draftees and uncontracted players. It was a decision focused on getting the balance right.”
The GIANTS recently launched their 2012 membership packages. To join the GIANTS and be part of history go to www.gwsgiants.com.au
The GIANTS’ first AFL match will be against the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium on March 24.
