Greater Western Sydney GIANTS Midfielder Dom Tyson will undergo surgery next week after he injured his knee at training this week.
Scans revealed Tyson ruptured his posterior cruciate ligament at training on Wednesday and will now undergo surgery next Tuesday with Dr Julian Feller in Melbourne.
GIANTS Sport Science Manager John Quinn said the club had consulted with a number of surgeons to determine the best course of action.
"It was an unfortunate incident caused by a collision with another player as part of a tackling drill. There is slight damage to medial ligament but fortunately the ACL is intact and there doesn't seem to be too much collateral damage," said Quinn.
"We looked at all options and determined this was the best course of action. The recovery time from an operation like this is around five months and it is expected that Dom could be back playing in May.”
General Manager Football Graeme Allan said it was a blow for Tyson and the club but it would provide him with all the support he needed to make a full recovery.
"Obviously any injury like this is a blow to any young player and we will provide Dom with all the support he needs, " Allan said. "We are confident he will make a full recovery and pleased he will be able to make a return to playing during 2013."
