NSW Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Barry O'Farrell has described Greater Western Sydney GIANTS Head Coach Kevin Sheedy as one of his childhood idols.

The Premier is the latest prominent Australian to pay tribute to Sheedy ahead of his 1000th game against Port Adelaide at Skoda Stadium this Saturday.

In a video message on GIANTS TV, he said: "Kevin Sheedy was a remarkable footballer and remarkable coach and is celebrating a significant milestone never before achieved in the history of the AFL.

"You were a teenage idol of mine, a key player in that team that I then used to support and what I find remarkable after all these years is that your enthusiasm for the game, the energy you’d put into it is just the same as it was when you won that first grand final back in 1969.

"If you’d gone into politics you would still have been a champion. You would have made Jeff Kennett look boring, you would have made John Howard appear wishy washy and Paul Keating would have looked as though he was lost for words.

"I hope you enjoy this significant anniversary and I’m pleased that you’re here in Sydney. Congratulations and all the best."
