The chairman of the AFL Commission Mike Fitzpatrick has kicked the first goal at the GIANTS new training oval at Sydney Olympic Park.

Fitzpatrick joined GIANTS Chairman Tony Shepherd as they inspected the oval and plans for the club's offices and football department at the site of the former golf centre.

The former Carlton ruckman, who captained the Blues to premierships in 1981-2, also took advantage of the recently erected goalposts to test his goal kicking skills.

The AFL Chairman appeared to have lost none of his touch, slotting several majors from a number of difficult angles.

As well as his footy skills, Fitzpatrick was also impressed by the new oval which it is hoped will be ready for training in the coming weeks.

It's part of a major development which will also include a Life Learning Centre funded by the Federal Government and state of the art facilities to rival other AFL clubs.

The new training and administration base is located close to the GIANTS home ground at Skoda Stadium. The whole project is expected to be completed later this year.

Fitzpatrick also visited GIANTS staff at their temporary offices at Sydney Olympic Park and addressed the players ahead of the Battle of the Bridge against the Swans at ANZ Stadium on Saturday.
